The Jamaican National Bird The humming bird, which is also called the doctor bird, is the national bird of Jamaica. It is also known as the swallow tail humming bird and is unique to Jamaica only. It is one of the most outstanding of 320 species of this tiny bird. A mature male doctor bird has two long tails, which flows behind him when he flies. The female bird does not have long feathers but has a shorter tail and feathers with a white tip. These unique birds can be found wherever there are flowering plants, in gardens and parks. They consume the nectar from plants, also spider and insects frequently throughout the day and hibernate at night to conserve energy. |
